What Is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)? Symptoms and Causes Explained 

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is not being just tired. It’s a debilitating, constant disease that pulls down everything in your life—your energy, your nerves, your brain. It may begin out of the blue—perhaps after a bad virus, a massive shock, or weeks of intense stress—and then you get slammed with intense exhaustion, pain that refuses to let up, and a brain fog that makes you feel as though you’re trudging through a fog. 

The question “What is chronic fatigue syndrome?” is asked frequently, particularly by individuals who feel drained constantly but cannot discover the answers. It’s not laziness or fluff. It’s a true, complex disease that clogs your nervous system, interferes with energy generation, and sidetracks everyday life in woolly ways.

Think about this: it is estimated that between 836,000 and 2.5 million individuals in the U.S. have ME/CFS, and approximately 90% of those go undiagnosed because physicians overlook it or attribute it to another condition (CDC, 2021). That gap between suffering and understanding is huge.

What Happens in ME/CFS? 

ME/CFS messes with several systems at once:

A signature symptom is post-exertional malaise (PEM)—that dreaded crash after just a simple task. Even basic activity in the morning can trigger an afternoon that feels like days of recovery.

  • Sleep that leaves you more worn out 
  • Pain in muscles and joints that seems to come from nowhere 
  • Brain fog so thick you can’t form a sentence

Sufferers of ME/CFS tend to be stuck—too sick for work, for school, even for trash duty. In serious cases, they can become housebound or bedridden.

Who Gets ME/CFS—and Why?

  • It hits women 2–4 times more than men (Institute of Medicine, 2015) 
  • It usually emerges between the ages of 30–50 
  • It’s now appearing more in children and teens 
  • Often, symptoms begin after a virus, emotional trauma, or stress 

Since the COVID pandemic, cases have spiked. Somewhere between 10–30% of people with Long COVID show symptoms matching ME/CFS (NIH RECOVER, 2022). 

Here’s the thing: the cause of myalgic encephalomyelitis CFS isn’t pinned down to a single trigger. It’s more of a cascade of causes—viruses (consider EBV, COVID), immune system glitches, mitochondrial failures, and even chemical insult.
